Emma Reeder leads Q&A sessions

Multilingual Q&A Sessions Support New Tech Users

  • November 15, 2021
  • Home Connect

How can I uninstall apps from my tablet? Where do I check to ensure my email was sent? How can I add a background photo to my home screen? How do I update my device’s systems?

These are just a few of the many questions CTN learners asked in our recent Q&A sessions. While every learner in the Home Connect program receives one-on-one digital literacy training, many reach out after completing their lessons with app-specific or technical questions. Noticing that many learners were asking similar questions, we launched virtual Q&A sessions to solve problems and answer questions in a group setting. This allows us to streamline the process of responding to learners’ needs while providing the learners another avenue for connection.

In the beginning, we offered sessions to English- and Spanish-speaking groups. Now, we offer monthly Cantonese Q&As as well. Led by CTN staff instructors or volunteer digital coaches, each session welcomes Home Connect learners past and present. For October’s sessions, we had 22 English-speaking learners, 5 Spanish-speaking learners, and 18 Cantonese-speaking learners join. These were some of the most popular topics discussed:

  • Uploading videos to YouTube
  • Assistance in joining Zoom, sharing screens, and changing Zoom backgrounds
  • ATT TV Stream app to tablet as Direct TV stream
  • Word app to tablet
  • Navigating email (clearing trash, checking sent messages, etc.)
  • Scanning QR codes
  • Using Google Maps
  • Pairing a Bluetooth device with a tablet
  • Creating more storage by deleting files

CTN instructors are glad to help learners with whatever question arises — but it is even more rewarding when learners can help each other. Oftentimes, a learner will jump to answer a question or explain a concept before the instructor. It is inspiring to see how past learners have expanded their digital skills and feel confident to share them with others. Having this sense of community and collaboration is an integral aspect of continued learning.

Learner Spotlight: A Learner's Journey to Digital Independence—One of the greatest joys of teaching digital literacy is witnessing the confidence that grows with every new skill learned. During our Solano Connected Spanish digital literacy class, I had the privilege of working with R.T., whose determination and perseverance were truly inspiring. When R.T. joined the program, she had little to no digital literacy experience. Despite feeling nervous on the first day, she arrived with something even more important than experience—a genuine desire to learn.Like many first-time technology users, R.T. was afraid of damaging the tablet. She carefully held the device, worried that pressing the wrong button would break it. I reassured her that she could safely explore, make mistakes, and learn without fear. From that moment on, she approached every lesson with patience and determination.By the end of the program, R.T. had gained much more than technical skills—she had gained confidence, independence, and new opportunities. The rest of the story: digitallift.org/learner-spotlight-a-learners-journey-to-digital-independen#DigitalIndependencede#solanoconnectedec#DigitalLiteracyer#digitalliftlLIFT ...

For nearly two decades, digitalLIFT has worked alongside community organizations, educators, volunteers, and students to ensure that everyone has the skills, resources, and confidence needed to participate fully in today’s digital world. Through service-learning partnerships, digitalLIFT creates opportunities for students to move beyond the classroom and contribute to meaningful community-driven solutions. One of these valued partnerships is with the University of San Francisco through the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good. Through this collaboration, students have supported digital inclusion efforts while gaining firsthand experience working alongside community members.Angeline Vuong, Director of Community-Engaged Learning and Strategic Partnerships at the McCarthy Center, shared how the partnership has impacted both students and the communities they serve. “One of the most meaningful aspects of partnering with digitalLIFT has been seeing our students apply what they learn in the classroom to meet a real community identified need.”Through their work with digitalLIFT, USF students develop practical skills in communication, teaching, and cultural humility while gaining a deeper understanding of how digital access impacts equity and opportunity.“Digital inclusion is not simply about technology,” Angeline shared. “It’s about expanding opportunities for people to access essential services, education, employment, healthcare, and civic participation.”Read full article: digitallift.org/building-digital-equity-through-service-learning/#DigitalEquity #ServiceLearning #USF #digitalLIFT ...
