Culture, Economics, and Technology in Cuba

  • February 9, 2016
  • General

In April, you can travel to Cuba while supporting CTN’s mission to transform lives through digital literacy. We will be leading a delegation there that will focus on culture, economics, and technology. Part fundraiser, part fact-finding, this will be a unique opportunity to observe Cuba at a pivotal point in time as its government, NGOs, and social institutions work together to close their digital divide.

Here are some of the people and organizations that we’ll get to meet:

  • The Ministry of Communications, the Ministry of Economy and Planning, and the Ministry of Technology and the Environment
  • Raúl Rodríguez, one of the organizers with the Joven Clubs/Youth Technology Centers
  • Professor Pedro Urra from Havana University, a founder of INFOMED, the open-source national health information network of Cuba, and an international consultant in information projects and social initiatives
  • Dr. Yudivian Almeida Cruz, Professor in the School of Mathematics and Computation at the University of Havana, who researches web-based information distribution systems
  • ICAP, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples that coordinates Cuba’s NGO-nonprofit programs and relations with solidarity groups in other countries

Interested in learning more? If you’re in the Bay Area, you’re invited to attend an information session on February 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Impact Hub. Click here to register. Or there will be an informational conference call on March 6 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific, 1:00 p.m. Eastern. Call 712-432-3022 and, when prompted, enter this code: 905123 #

When Andrew Rogge joined digitalLIFT in 2023, he was driven by curiosity. He had always assumed that younger generations naturally knew how to navigate technology. But as he began meeting learners from different backgrounds, he quickly realized that digital literacy gaps exist across all ages. At digitalLIFT’s Tech Labs, learners come seeking help with what others might consider simple tasks: deleting emails, managing smartphone settings, recognizing scams, or navigating online accounts. For Andrew, these moments are opportunities to empower people rather than simply fix a problem.“I always try not to do things for people,” he explains, “rather point to what they need to click or tap so they can learn and remember.”Read full article: digitallift.org/building-confidence-one-click-at-a-time/#DigitalLiteracy #BuildingConfidence #TechLabs #digitalLIFT ... A Practical Guide to Supporting Learners at Every Stage—At digitalLIFT, we’ve spent years designing digital skills training that helps people access opportunity—jobs, education, and essential services. But over time, we started noticing a pattern that challenged one of our core assumptions. Not every learner benefits from digital skills training in the same way. And more importantly—not every learner is ready for it.So our team started asking a harder question . . .Read full article: digitallift.org/digital-skills-arent-one-size-fits-all-a-practical-guide-to-supporting-learners-a...#Supporting Learners #DigitalInclusion #DigitalSkillsTraining #digitalLIFT ...
