Expanding Digital Literacy Training to Westbrook in Bayview

  • September 18, 2019
  • CPUC, Partner Spotlights

Last week I attended the grand opening of Westbrook, a beautifully renovated housing development managed by the San Francisco Housing Development Corporation (SFHDC). We began partnering with them in 2018 to offer digital literacy training at four of their properties. Westbrook is the fourth location fully wired with high-speed broadband to every unit by Monkey Brains, ready for residents to access the World Wide Web. The state-of-the-art connection, tailored instruction, and laptops for graduates to take home are made possible by funding from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

Pictured here you’ll find me along with many people involved in digital inclusion work in San Francisco. Some of our friends and partners shown are

  • Leo Sosa, Executive Director/Founder at Dev/Mission
  • Brian Roberts, Policy Analyst at City and County of San Francisco, Department of Technology
  • Scott Mauvais, Civic Innovator | Director at Microsoft
  • Preston Rhea, Director of Engineering, Policy Program, at Monkeybrains
  • Alex Bahn, Digital Equity Manager at City and County of San Francisco, Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development

The event included proud speeches, community celebration, and locally made refreshments, as well as a fun ribbon cutting by Mayor Breed.

We are excited to begin offering digital literacy training and distributing devices to residents at this location. One of the newest members of our staff, Nay Carter, will be leading our training efforts at Westbrook.

This month, we are proud to spotlight Andrew Broderick, a member of our Development Committee whose career has been shaped by decades of leadership at the intersection of technology, health, aging, and community impact.Andrew believes meaningful advocacy begins with personal experience. "Everyone has personal experiences of the challenges and barriers that digital inclusion presents... raising our voice to collectively demand supportive policy and funding to close the digital divide benefits everyone."His message is clear: share your story, speak up, and support the policies and investments that make digital equity possible for every community.Read the full story: digitallift.org/board-spotlight-andrew-broderick/#AndrewBroderick #DigitalInclusion #DigitalEquity #digitalLIFT ...

Learner Spotlight: A Learner's Journey to Digital Independence—One of the greatest joys of teaching digital literacy is witnessing the confidence that grows with every new skill learned. During our Solano Connected Spanish digital literacy class, I had the privilege of working with R.T., whose determination and perseverance were truly inspiring. When R.T. joined the program, she had little to no digital literacy experience. Despite feeling nervous on the first day, she arrived with something even more important than experience—a genuine desire to learn.Like many first-time technology users, R.T. was afraid of damaging the tablet. She carefully held the device, worried that pressing the wrong button would break it. I reassured her that she could safely explore, make mistakes, and learn without fear. From that moment on, she approached every lesson with patience and determination.By the end of the program, R.T. had gained much more than technical skills—she had gained confidence, independence, and new opportunities. The rest of the story: digitallift.org/learner-spotlight-a-learners-journey-to-digital-independen#DigitalIndependencede#solanoconnectedec#DigitalLiteracyer#digitalliftlLIFT ...
