Community Tech Network (CTN) is thrilled to work with the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development as part of the SF Bridge Digital Equity Program.
Through this initiative, CTN will provide devices and digital literacy training to adults living in affordable housing residences. We will also help these learners get connected to the internet by signing up for the Affordable Connectivity Program.
According to Rey LaChaux, the Mayor’s Office digital equity manager, “We want every person — especially those that have been historically marginalized or disenfranchised — to have access to all three legs of the digital inclusion stool: internet access, devices, and digital literacy skills. Organizations like CTN are proactively working to ensure that people have what they need to get online and access basic services.”
In order for the project to be sustainable, CTN is also recruiting local digital navigators. CTN will train these navigators so that they can serve as resources for their communities, providing ongoing digital support and advice to learners.
According to Rey, getting people online is extremely important. “People often can’t perform standard daily tasks without high-quality internet. For example, in the case of COVID, many folks needed to use telehealth, but they were not prepared with the digital tools.”
When describing the Mayor’s Office’s work with CTN thus far, Rey has nothing but positive things to say. “CTN has been on the ball and is excellent in terms of both follow-up and follow-through. It’s been a joy to work with them. Folks don’t realize that CTN has two of the earliest pioneers in digital literacy — Kami Griffiths and Kari Gray — working on the same team. These are people with invaluable knowledge. CTN is definitely strategically poised for long-term growth.”
